3 Natural Hair Myths Debunked

More of us are leaving relaxers in the box and going natural these days, but misinformation about our hair in its natural state still runs rampant. Here are some tips to help you on your natural journey:

Myth 1: Natural hair is strong.

Truth: Natural hair only looks strong. In reality, it’s very fragile. Treat it gently, and use wide-tooth combs (or your fingers).

Myth 2: Natural hair is hard to manage.

Truth: If you use the same tools and expect the same results you would on relaxed hair, you’ll be disappointed when you go natural. But once you learn to treat natural hair in a way that doesn’t try to change it, it’s just as manageable as any other type of hair.

Myth 3: Weather doesn’t matter.

Truth: Weather will dictate what your hair can do and how it will feel. The more coily and textured your hair is, the more fragile it is. But hair is like fingerprints: Everybody’s is different. Some hair loves humidity; other hair frizzes at the mere thought of moisture in the air. And nearly all hair can get brittle during the cold winter months when the dry air and wind sucks out the moisture.
