How Negative Ions Can Blow Away the Blues

We’ve heard of seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, the form of depression triggered by less sunlight during short winter days, but few know about SAD’s warm-weather cousin. You know the deal: Friends and co-workers post pictures on Facebook of their beaming, beach going, barbecue-filled vacations while you’re stuck at work.

For many, “Summertime Sadness” isn’t just a song—it’s a harsh reality. And adding to that is the stress of a less-than-stable climate. Summer heat can be overwhelming, especially to people with heat sensitivities, including menopausal women, the elderly and people on thyroid or hormone-regulating meds.

So how do you counteract summer’s blistery wrath when you’re just not feeling the heat? A/C of course! But, did you know air conditioners deplete the surrounding air of negative ions? And what are negative ions, you ask? They are invisible, odorless, tasteless particles found by the thousands in the air circulating at some feel-good locales, such as underneath waterfalls and at the beach. That’s part of the reason we get such a rush from places like that and why they’re such hot tourist sites. According to some studies, negative ions can work almost as well as antidepressants at boosting your mood. They increase oxygen flow to our brains, making us more alert. Other reports credit negative ions with strengthening nerve function, collagen and the immune system.

But you’re not going to stop using your air conditioner during the dog days of summer, even if they do destroy negative ions. So what do you do when you can’t just pack up and head to the beach?

Increase the supply of negative ions wherever you are—be it that muggy office or your own living room. Invest in a negative ion air purifier to help you keep your cool, in more ways than one. We spend so much time regulating the things we eat and drink, but what we put into our bodies every time we take a breath can be just as important.
